SLC were commissioned by the London Borough of Newham to undertake an exploratory study to look at options for expanding and improving the offer at Fairplay House, an outdoor education centre located in Maldon.

The primary output of the study was to identify costed options for the development of facilities and services which support additional use, improve the revenue position and strengthen the long-term business case for the facility.

In identifying a longlist of development options, SLC undertook a current state review and SWOT analysis of Fairplay House and supplemented this with a supply and demand assessment of potential additional facilities, engagement with key stakeholders and identification of exemplar case studies.

A series of development options were identified to extend the accommodation for schools, provide new meeting rooms and conference space and improve the outdoor activity offer all supported by outline designs, budget cost estimates and business plans. SLC also worked with the operational team to develop an action plan designed to help establish a more commercial, year-round approach to operation of the site through increased community and corporate use at weekends and in school holidays.

SLC’s report is now being used to support the Council’s decision-making regarding the future of the site.
