We are delighted to announce that SLC has been awarded B Corp certification.

SLC is one of only 1,500 companies in the UK which can demonstrate the highest levels of commitment to social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

We’re proud to be the first company in the leisure and active wellbeing sector to achieve B Corp.

What is a B Corp?

B Corps are companies that take their social and environmental responsibilities just as seriously as their financial performance and profits. B Corps always consider the interests of their staff, customers, communities and the environment.

B Corps are leaders in promoting systems change, paving the way towards more inclusive, equitable, ethical and sustainable ways of working.

What does it mean for SLC?

While SLC has always taken its social and environmental responsibilities seriously, we wanted to benchmark our approach with leading progressive organisations globally. We looked for an independent assessment that would challenge and stretch us.

B Corp met that requirement perfectly. It is respected, rigorous and sets the bar extremely high. We knew achieving B Corp wouldn’t be a tick box exercise – we would be challenged hard on everything we do as a business. As a result of over a year’s work, we’ve made positive changes to our articles, mission, purpose and day-to-day practices.

Most companies’ initial applications fail so we are particularly proud to have been successful first time around with an upper quartile score.

What does this mean for our clients?

For our local authority clients, working with a B Corp like SLC means assurance that we are focused on people and the planet and not just profit. Our values are aligned with those of our clients – we want to make a difference locally and globally. We hope this has always been apparent but now we have the independent assessment to prove it.

What next?

The work doesn’t stop here. We will be continually reviewing and improving our practices in line with the B Corp philosophy, not simply to achieve re-certification but also to raise our game and do more to impact society and the environment in a positive way.

Duncan Wood-Allum, Managing Director of SLC said,

“SLC is always seeking to show leadership within our sector and to achieve B Corps certification at our first attempt is one of our proudest achievements.

We have always championed the wider social and environmental impacts of the work our clients enable and deliver within their communities.

We’ve never been a great fan of awards that are often linked to paid affiliation or membership – rather we like to measure our organisation against strict global standards such as ISO 9001:2015 and now B Corp.

Our clients know the difference in quality and experience of working with us on a day-to-day basis. We hope this new recognition of our unrelenting commitment to quality and wider social and environmental impacts will enable us to do more great work across the UK in 2024.”
