I am very excited to be joining Duncan and the SLC team as a Director. The leisure and cultural services industry is going through a period of rapid change and SLC are well placed to play a key role in influencing and developing the market. My background in leisure facility planning and development and extensive experience in a wide range of alternative service delivery models, including outsourcing, PPPs, not for profits, asset transfers and controlled companies, I can help SLC’s clients secure a positive future for their leisure and cultural services.
As many Councils seek to withdraw revenue support for the operation of leisure centres, more innovative approaches are required to ensure all communities have access to financially sustainable leisure services, especially those from less well-off areas. SLC are helping Councils secure the future sustainability of their leisure assets through long term investment led projects and the procurement of effective external partnerships.
We are also working with Councils to develop programmes to target the least active, to help improve health and wellbeing, recognising that the vast majority of people never use a traditional leisure centre. Innovative approaches are therefore required that focus away from the traditional ‘gym and swim’ model.
My role will be to support the existing team expand its commissioning and procurement capabilities, allowing SLC to grow and support more clients, whilst working with Duncan to develop and expand SLC’s portfolio of services.
Despite the continued financial pressures on local government, it is exciting time for SLC helping our clients respond to the challenge of finding innovative solutions to deliver leisure and cultural services with fewer and fewer resources.
